Newcastle United fans paid a heartfelt tribute to Kevin Keegan at St James' Park before the Premier League game against Liverpool, with a Wor Flags display honouring the former player and manager.
Tribute to King Kev
The atmosphere was one of immense respect as 'King Kev' was remembered pre-match. A tremendous Wor Flags display showcased the adoration of the Toon fans, including a banner showing Kevin Keegan on Tyneside as both a player and a manager. Liverpool supporters also shared their own tributes to a man who was just as special to them from his playing days.
One part of the display featured a famous quote that encapsulates the man: "I want people to dream about their football club. They should, we should all be dreamers at heart. Some people are the opposite and say 'we can't do that', but when you ask them why, they can't give a reason. Well, I say, 'Why not?'"
Match action
After the tributes, the football began with Newcastle United getting off to a perfect start on the counter attack. William Osula slipped in Anthony Elanga to score the Magpies' first goal of the season and his first Premier League goal in a Newcastle shirt.
Going in at the break 1-0 up, Newcastle saw Liverpool equalise through Cody Gakpo. Minutes later, substitute Joe Willock scored with just his second touch of the game to make it 2-1, putting the Toon back in front.
Late drama
With the last kick of the game, Liverpool snatched a point from the jaws of defeat as Dominik Szoboszlai scored a penalty, leaving the Newcastle fans feeling flat despite the incredible performance their players produced. The final score was 2-2.
