Gary Neville has singled out Arsenal forward Gabriel Jesus, urging him to step forward immediately and use his title-winning experience to calm the squad's nerves after a damaging weekend loss. The Gunners' Premier League bid was threatened by a defeat to Bournemouth on Saturday, which allowed Manchester City to close the gap with a hammering of Chelsea just over 24 hours later.
Title Showdown Looms as Arsenal Face Pressure
Arsenal now face a crucial title showdown with Manchester City next weekend, with Pep Guardiola's side knowing that winning all their remaining games could secure them the championship once again. The north Londoners played with visible nervousness against Bournemouth, leading to boos from the Emirates crowd as they were booed off the pitch.
Jesus: The Lone Title Winner in Arsenal's Squad
For all their quality and progression in recent years, Arsenal are starved of players who have actually emerged victorious in a Premier League title race. Gabriel Jesus is the only member of the current squad to have lifted the trophy, having won it three times with Manchester City before joining Arsenal in 2022.
Neville suggested on his podcast that this might be the week where Jesus needs to take centre stage in the dressing room. He said: "The problem they've got is they haven't got anybody of experience in the club of winning a title. Gabriel Jesus maybe, but I don't think he's the type of player that's going to translate that to a dressing room."
He added: "Doesn't seem to be that character. He's a good player, but he doesn't seem to be that person who can really set the tone. Maybe this week he does have to have an influence for Arsenal."
Arteta's Challenge to Find an Advantage
Neville acknowledged that Mikel Arteta is always looking for ways to gain an advantage and must find something this week. He questioned whether Jesus could be the key, saying: "Is it Gabriel Jesus, who just talks about what a title race is like. You know he's been through some big ones with Liverpool, some monstrous battles, and come through them."
Arsenal have finished second in each of the past three Premier League seasons. In two of those campaigns, they were leading until late on, only for Manchester City to seize on their mistakes and claim the title. Neville insists it would be naive for Arteta and his players to think they could win their first league without serious challenge, despite previously boasting a comfortable lead at the summit.
The Reality of Winning a First Title
"You don't win your first title by running away with it by 26 points - it just doesn't happen," Neville stated. "That's not reality. It's always going to be a struggle, and there's probably been a couple of bad experiences in the previous seasons in getting to this point."
The Brazilian forward, who is not known for being a huge presence in the dressing room, now faces the challenge of trying to bring some calm to Arsenal's environment. With the title race heating up, his experience could prove invaluable as the Gunners look to overcome their recent setbacks and mount a serious challenge against Manchester City.
