Gary Neville has responded to Ruben Amorim's post-match comments after the Manchester United manager hinted at a departure when his contract expires. Amorim, speaking after the 1-1 draw with Leeds United, suggested he was brought in as a manager, not just a coach, and implied he would leave after 18 months unless the board decides otherwise.
Amorim's remarks included a reference to Neville, stating: 'If people cannot handle the Gary Neville and the criticism of everything, we need to change the club.' The United boss also emphasised that he wants to oversee more than just training ground performance, including recruitment and other departments.
On his podcast, Neville described the comments as 'bizarre' and suggested Amorim is unhappy with the hierarchy. 'To say that you've come to the club as a manager... Manager is a title that we don't see anymore,' Neville said. He added that Amorim's words indicate he is 'not happy about something in the hierarchy.'
Neville dismissed Amorim's mention of him as typical of managers in difficult periods having a go at pundits. He maintained that his criticism of United's performances, such as against Wolves and Everton, is part of his job. 'The bigger problem isn't about what he said about me... it's more the problem of what he's saying is happening behind the scenes,' Neville concluded.
