Nagelsmann warned against Man Utd job as Carrick pressure grows
Nagelsmann warned against Man Utd job amid Carrick pressure

Julian Nagelsmann has been advised against taking the Manchester United job, with Oliver Kahn warning that the club has seen nearly every recent manager fail. The warning comes as pressure builds on current boss Michael Carrick following a heavy Champions League defeat.

Nagelsmann is currently out of work after leaving the Germany national team following their World Cup exit. He was among the candidates considered for the United role in the summer before Carrick was appointed on a permanent basis.

Kahn's warning on United's managerial record

Speaking on the Sky Germany show Triple - der Hagedorn Fußballtalk, Kahn said: "The Premier League and Manchester United have not been known for much continuity in the managerial position in recent years."

He added: "He has to ask himself: What is my next step? Does it have to be the right one? Or do I immediately associate it with an enormous risk like Manchester United, where essentially every manager in recent years has failed sooner or later? You should look very carefully at where you're going."

Kahn, who worked with Nagelsmann at Bayern Munich, also suggested that the Germany and Bayern roles may have taken a toll on the 39-year-old, and questioned whether his qualities are better suited to a team aiming to rise and challenge the elite.

United's recent struggles and managerial turnover

United's season hit a new low this week with a 4-1 defeat at Como in the Champions League. Carrick was subdued at full-time as he waved to travelling fans, with speculation growing that the Old Trafford hierarchy could make another managerial change.

The likes of Jose Mourinho, Louis van Gaal and Ruben Amorim have all tried and failed to restore success at United. Amorim lasted just over a year in the role, while Erik ten Hag was sacked shortly after being backed by Ineos.

According to the Daily Mail, United's director of recruitment Christopher Vivell is pushing hard for Nagelsmann to be the leading candidate. The 39-year-old is reportedly on a five-man shortlist of managers who have been privately sounded out should United decide to replace Carrick.

Pressure on United's hierarchy

United's bosses are themselves under serious pressure as their managerial decisions continue to be questioned. Since Ineos took over, they have backed ten Hag before sacking him, hired Amorim who lasted just over a year, and then backed Carrick despite warning signs over his experience.

Nagelsmann, who previously held top jobs at Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig, could again be in the frame for the United position, but Kahn has urged him to consider the risks carefully before accepting any offer.
