MPs back calls for Harry Kane knighthood after Ballon d'Or

MPs are backing the Daily Star's calls for Harry Kane to be given a knighthood after the Bayern Munich striker won the Ballon d'Or on Monday, becoming the first Englishman to claim the award in a quarter of a century.

Labour MP Rosena Allin-Khan said: “Harry Kane is a superb footballer and a brilliant role model for the millions of young boys and girls who want to play the game. I hope he joins the pantheon of England’s footballing knights.”

Her party colleague Clive Efford, MP for Eltham and Chislehurst, added: “When his career is over of course he should (get a knighthood) - the travesty is Bobby Moore never got one.”

Record-breaking season

The 33-year-old netted 73 times for club and country last season, making him England's all-time record goal scorer. Kane's victory comes exactly 70 years after Stanley Matthews became the first-ever recipient of the award.

Michael Owen was the last player from England to receive the prestigious individual accolade in 2001. Kane follows in the footsteps of Bobby Charlton and Kevin Keegan to become the fifth Ballon d'Or winner from England.

Political support and betting odds

Andy Burnham's spokeswoman said: “It caps a remarkable season and Harry continues to set a brilliant example to young players across the country, and the PM knows the whole nation will be incredibly proud of him.

“And, hopefully, there’s another trophy to celebrate with England before too long.”

The victory prompted bookies Ladbrokes to shorten their odds to 2/1 that Kane makes the honours list this year. Spokesperson Nicola McGeady said: "Calls for Harry Kane to be knighted are growing louder and we have been forced to slash the odds on him becoming a Sir sooner rather than later."
