Francesco Molinari Advocates for Luke Donald to Continue as Ryder Cup Captain

Italian golfer Francesco Molinari has publicly endorsed Luke Donald to retain his position as Team Europe captain for a historic third Ryder Cup, scheduled for 2027 at Adare Manor in Ireland. This comes after Donald withdrew from the Hero Dubai Desert Classic due to illness, sparking speculation about his future in the role.

Donald's Decision Pending Amidst Support from Team Europe

Luke Donald, who has led Europe to two consecutive victories in Rome and New York, revealed plans to discuss his captaincy future with DP World Tour officials in Dubai this week, with a final decision expected by March. Molinari, serving as a vice-captain, emphasised that Donald has earned the right to take his time in making this crucial choice.

"Obviously, we are all waiting to hear from Luke," Molinari stated. "He deserved the right to take his time and he's earned the right to take his time and make the decision. I think we were all honestly wishing for him to come back one more time, all the players and basically all the team that's been working with him the last four years."

Molinari's Readiness and Team Environment Praise

While strongly backing Donald, Molinari acknowledged his own willingness to assume the captaincy if Donald steps down. "It's one of those, yes, obviously I'd never say no. I'd never turn it down if I'm asked. I'd love to do it," he said, though he added that he is content with his current role and family commitments.

Molinari highlighted the exceptional team atmosphere under Donald's leadership as a key factor that might persuade him to continue. "It's by far the best team environment I've seen since I've been involved in 2010," he remarked. "I think that's the biggest thing pulling Luke back one more time. Being the first captain to win three times is definitely a very attractive proposition."

Golf Performance and Future Outlook

On the course, Molinari showcased his skills with a superb seven-under par 65 in the first round of the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, despite challenging blustery conditions. This strong performance comes as a positive sign for the world No.418, whose recent career has been hampered by injuries.

Looking ahead, Molinari noted that he has not held any discussions with DP World Tour boss Guy Kinnings about the captaincy and remains focused on his game and personal life. "I am pretty happy where I am," he concluded, indicating a balanced perspective on his future in golf leadership.
