MLS Sprint Season Set for February 2027 Launch
Major League Soccer has officially outlined the structure of its highly anticipated 2027 sprint season, marking a pivotal shift as the league transitions to a fall-to-spring calendar. This condensed campaign will kick off in February 2027, offering a fast-paced alternative to the traditional marathon-like regular season.
Format and Schedule Details
The sprint season will span just under three months, with all 30 MLS teams competing exclusively within their conferences. Western Conference clubs will face only Western opponents, and Eastern Conference teams will do the same, eliminating inter-conference play until the MLS Cup. Each team will play 14 regular-season games: seven at home and seven away, ensuring a balanced but intense schedule.
Playoffs will follow a streamlined single-elimination bracket, with the top eight teams from each conference advancing. The postseason is slated to conclude in May, setting the stage for the league's full calendar switch later that year.
Cup Qualification and Stakes
Beyond the playoffs, the sprint season carries significant implications for cup competitions. Five berths into the 2028 Concacaf Champions Cup will be awarded based on sprint season results, adding a layer of prestige and competition. Additionally, 18 teams—nine per conference—will qualify for the 2028 Leagues Cup, further incentivizing strong performances.
The impact on the US Open Cup remains uncertain, as US Soccer has yet to announce how MLS's calendar change will affect the tournament. Historically, the Open Cup has operated within a single calendar year, with MLS teams entering in later rounds. In 2026, 16 MLS clubs participated, though notable absences included defending champion Nashville SC and MLS Cup holder Inter Miami.
Team Preparations and Future Outlook
Clubs are already adjusting their rosters in anticipation of the sprint season. For instance, DC United secured goalkeeper Sean Johnson with a contract guaranteed through June 2027, while Nashville SC added players like Shak Mohammed and Isaiah LeFlore with options for both the sprint season and the subsequent 2027-28 campaign.
Following the sprint season, the first full fall-to-spring season will commence in July 2027, culminating with MLS Cup in May 2028. The league plans to implement a winter break from mid-December to early February, aligning with international football schedules and enhancing competitive balance.
This sprint season represents a bold experiment for MLS, potentially reshaping fan engagement and team strategies as the league evolves its format to match global standards.
