Rory McIlroy has made his stance unequivocal regarding the potential return of LIV Golf players to the PGA Tour, as the Saudi-backed circuit faces an uncertain future. The Northern Irishman, who remained loyal to the PGA Tour amid notable defections, has long championed reintegration without penalties.
LIV Golf's Funding Crisis
The Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund (PIF) announced on Thursday that it will cease financing LIV Golf after the 2026 season concludes. This bombshell development has cast doubt on the breakaway tour's survival, leaving its 57 players—including Phil Mickelson, Bryson DeChambeau, and Jon Rahm—in a state of limbo. LIV had already seen five-time major champion Brooks Koepka leave earlier this year, with McIlroy welcoming him back to the PGA Tour after Koepka reportedly agreed to settle £55 million in fines.
McIlroy's Position
Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast in January, the two-time Masters champion said: "They've made the money, but they've paid their consequence in terms of the reputation and some of the things they've lost by going over there. If it made the overall tour stronger to have Bryson DeChambeau back and whoever else, I would be OK with it. But again, it's not just me, and I recognise that not everyone is in my position. It would be up to the collective group of PGA Tour members to make that decision."
Months before whispers emerged that the PIF might withdraw funding, McIlroy cast doubt on LIV's viability, pointing to a lack of fresh ideas. He remarked: "I've watched a little bit of it and it's just, it's not, I don't know—and maybe it's just I'm too much of a traditionalist to get it, but it just doesn't seem to have anything. They were coming into the game saying, 'We're gonna be different, we're gonna be this, we're gonna be that.' Even the fact they've now switched from 54 holes to 72 holes to get world-ranking points, so it's like, you're just doing what everyone else is doing. So, what's different, apart from the money?"
PIF's Statement
In its announcement, PIF stated: "PIF has made the decision to fund LIV Golf only for the remainder of the 2026 season. The substantial investment required by LIV Golf over a longer term is no longer consistent with the current phase of PIF's investment strategy. This decision has been made in light of PIF's investment priorities and current macro dynamics. The LIV Golf board has created a committee of independent directors to evaluate strategic alternatives for its future beyond PIF's funding horizon." PIF added that LIV Golf "has forever changed the game of golf for the better" and that the fund remains committed to sports investments globally.
Impact on Players
The uncertainty leaves LIV players facing difficult decisions. McIlroy's openness to their return without fines could ease the path for some, but the final decision rests with PGA Tour members collectively. As the 2026 season approaches, the golf world watches closely to see how this saga unfolds.
