Conor McGregor has taken to social media to mock Max Holloway and Nate Diaz as he prepares for his long-awaited return to the UFC. The Irishman, who has not fought in the Octagon since November 2016, posted a series of messages aimed at his former opponents.
McGregor's latest jabs come amid a war of words with Holloway, who recently defeated Jose Aldo at UFC 218. The pair have been trading insults online, with Holloway mocking McGregor's recent comeback statement. Holloway tweeted: 'After I was pulled from 222, I offered to amputate my leg and fight for a 115lb belt against DJ. It was very very close. Plans were in place. But I was told there wasn’t enough time.'
McGregor responded by sharing a picture of Holloway with bruises from their 2013 bout, which McGregor won. He also took aim at Nate Diaz, whom he fought twice in 2016, sharing a meme that appeared to mock Diaz's recent comments.
The back-and-forth has led to speculation about a potential rematch between McGregor and Holloway. However, McGregor's head coach, John Kavanagh, has cast doubt on the idea, saying he does not see McGregor returning to the featherweight division. 'I find it hard to see that happening,' Kavanagh told Express Sport.
McGregor is expected to return to the UFC later this year, with a potential fight against the winner of the upcoming bout between Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov. The Irishman has been out of action since claiming the lightweight title at UFC 205, becoming the promotion's first simultaneous two-weight champion.
