Aiden McGeady believes Celtic missed a trick by not signing Dan Neil before Rangers, and he has admitted to giving his former Sunderland teammate some stick over his move to Ibrox.
McGeady's Verdict on Neil
Speaking on GO Radio, the former Republic of Ireland winger praised Neil's dedication and technical ability. "Dan Neil is a very, very focused individual and is a very, very good trainer who is totally dedicated to his craft," McGeady said. "Technically, he's very, very good. He's clever and very good at finding passes, space and doesn't over-complicate the game."
McGeady, who played alongside Neil for four years at Sunderland between 2018 and 2022, added: "Before he went to Rangers, I was thinking 'Celtic could look at him'. He was fantastic for Sunderland when I was there, got promoted with them and then went to Ipswich, and then they got promoted."
Rangers Move Surprised McGeady
The 24-year-old midfielder joined Rangers on a free transfer after his Ipswich contract was terminated, having been tracked by the Gers in January. Neil was handed the number six shirt and captained the side in pre-season before making his debut as a second-half substitute in Friday's 1-1 draw at Dundee United.
McGeady admitted he was taken aback by the move: "I was actually surprised that he went to Rangers. I was messaging him and giving him a bit of banter saying 'you are better than this'. But half-heartedly, as I do think he is. He is a very, very good young player."
