Ryan McAidoo's standout performance in Manchester City's pre-season opener against Inter Milan has sparked discussions about his development. The 18-year-old winger was a constant threat after coming on in the second half, nearly scoring with a strike that hit the post.
Impressive Display in Hong Kong
McAidoo was one of three players chosen to model City's new away kit in Hong Kong, alongside Phil Foden and Abdukodir Khusanov. His on-pitch performance justified that choice, as he consistently troubled the Inter defence with his direct running and willingness to shoot.
His display drew praise from new manager Enzo Maresca, who said: "Since day one to be honest with Ryan, we were speaking with the club and since day one he is the kind of winger I love. Very aggressive one v one, he always tries, makes the right decisions."
Potential and Development Path
McAidoo scored his first senior goal for City last season in a 10-1 FA Cup win over Exeter. Former manager Pep Guardiola had previously praised him, saying: "The guy he wants the ball constantly. When Ryan faces the goal, he's so dangerous."
Maresca acknowledged the need for careful handling: "But he is very young and he needs the right path. At the moment, with most of the young players, the idea was to see them during pre-season and then decide."
Loan or Stay?
City have faced similar decisions with young talents before. Phil Foden and Cole Palmer both impressed in pre-season early in their careers, but their paths diverged. While Foden stayed and became a regular, Palmer moved to Chelsea for a significant fee.
The club has shown willingness to loan out academy players, as with goalkeeper Pierce Charles, who was sent to QPR after returning from Sheffield Wednesday. However, keeping McAidoo around the first-team squad could allow him to develop further at the Etihad, especially with potential changes among wingers this summer.
