A Paris labour court has ruled that Paris Saint-Germain must pay Kylian Mbappé more than €60 million (£52.7 million) in a dispute over unpaid wages and bonuses linked to the end of his contract before his 2024 move to Real Madrid.
The court sided with the player amid accusations of betrayal and harassment. PSG had been seeking €440 million from Mbappé, citing damages and loss of opportunity after he left on a free transfer. The club is expected to appeal.
Mbappé’s representatives said the ruling “confirms that commitments must be honoured. It restores a simple truth: even in the professional football industry labour law applies to everyone.”
PSG stated: “Paris Saint-Germain takes note of the judgement… which it will execute, while reserving the right to appeal. The club has always acted in good faith and with integrity.”
The dispute stems from Mbappé’s decision in 2023 not to extend his contract, which expired in summer 2024. He was sidelined from a pre-season tour and forced to train with fringe players. PSG alleged Mbappé backed out of an agreement to reduce pay if he left on a free transfer, while his camp insisted no such agreement existed.
Mbappé joined Real Madrid on a free transfer after scoring a club-record 256 goals in seven years at PSG. The French club are seeking €440 million in damages, including €180 million for the lost opportunity to transfer him.
