Crystal Palace Striker Jean-Philippe Mateta Avoids Surgery After Knee Injury Derails AC Milan Transfer
Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has delivered positive news regarding striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, confirming that the French international will not require surgery for the knee problem that dramatically scuppered his proposed deadline-day move to Italian giants AC Milan.
Failed Medical Thwarts San Siro Switch
Mateta was on the very verge of completing a transfer to AC Milan on the final day of the January window. The deal collapsed at the eleventh hour when Milan's medical staff discovered that the striker's ongoing knee issue was more serious than initially anticipated during his medical examination. This left the 27-year-old in an awkward position, forced to return to Selhurst Park after having actively pushed for an exit.
Glasner Provides Encouraging Update on Recovery
While unable to provide a precise return date, Glasner offered an optimistic prognosis. "Fortunately he does not need surgery," the Eagles boss stated. "The knee, the injury is not as bad as feared and so we think and the opinion from several specialists and doctors is that we can deal with the knee in a better way than with surgery."
Glasner acknowledged Mateta would miss a period of time but emphasised the positive outcome. "He will miss a certain time, I can't say two weeks, three weeks, four weeks. He doesn't need surgery, that is positive and hopefully he is back soon."
Reintegration and Competition at Selhurst Park
Mateta now faces the challenge of reintegrating into a Crystal Palace squad that has strengthened its attacking options in his absence. The club secured the record signing of striker Jorgen Strand Larsen, who made his debut in Palace's recent victory over Brighton. This adds direct competition for the forward, who is currently the club's top scorer this season with 10 goals across all competitions.
Addressing the player's mindset following the collapsed transfer, Glasner said, "It was a disappointment but he is looking forward to the next months. It is good for him now that there is a final decision taken... He wants to be back as soon as possible and contribute to achieve our goals. That is his mindset and I think that is the best he can do."
Manager Backs Striker to Win Back Fan Support
Despite Mateta's evident desire to leave the club last month, Glasner expressed full confidence that the player would receive a warm welcome back from the Palace faithful and would give his all for the team.
"What they can expect is that everybody gives his best when he wears the Eagle," Glasner asserted. "And I'm 100 percent convinced that JP will give his best when he wears the Eagle shirt again, and I think then he deserves the best support. I'm pretty sure our fans will support him in the best way, appreciating what he has done for Crystal Palace."
The manager concluded with a firm principle for his squad: "As long as a player is here, as long as a manager is here, as long as a staff member is here, then everybody can expect being 100 percent committed to Crystal Palace and that is what JP will show." Mateta's rehabilitation will now take place at the club's training ground as he aims for a swift return to action.
