2,000lb Sea Lion 'Chonkers' Becomes Unlikely Celebrity in San Francisco
Massive Sea Lion 'Chonkers' Charms San Francisco

A colossal 2,000lb Steller sea lion affectionately dubbed 'Chonkers' has emerged as an unexpected local celebrity after taking up residence in the San Francisco Bay area. The massive marine mammal first appeared at a dock on Pier 39 about a month ago and has remained in the vicinity ever since, captivating residents, tourists, and social media users who frequently share photos and videos of the animal towering over its peers.

Size and Species

Chonkers belongs to a much larger breed than the more common California sea lions typically found in the Bay area. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, California sea lions rarely exceed 850lb and 7ft in length. In contrast, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reports that male Steller sea lions can reach up to 2,500lb and 11ft in length, with a lifespan of 20 to 30 years.

Unusual Visitor

While Steller sea lions are typically found in Alaskan waters, harbormaster Sheila Chandor told the Chronicle in March that they occasionally stray as far south as San Francisco 'every few years'. The pier can host up to 2,000 sea lions at certain times of the year, but Chonkers stands out due to his extraordinary size.

Local harbor officials have described Chonkers as a 'morning lark', advising enthusiasts to 'get to the Pier early' for the best chance of spotting him near the viewing area, as reported by the Chronicle last month. The sea lion's growing fame has turned him into a beloved figure, with residents and visitors alike alerting each other whenever the 'chonky' animal is sighted.
