Former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood has been accused of spitting at Aston Villa midfielder Amadou Onana during a pre-season friendly between Marseille and Aston Villa. The incident occurred in the south of France, where Greenwood now plays for Marseille after joining the club in summer 2024.
A clip shared on social media shows Greenwood fouling Onana before appearing to spit in his direction. Onana reacted by wiping his face, seemingly indicating he had been spat at, which led to a brawl between players. Fans online noted the gesture, with one writing: 'Onana wipes his face like he’d been spat on.' Another questioned: 'Did Greenwood spit at him too? What’s wrong with the kid?'
Marseille won the match 3-1, with Greenwood among the scorers. Marseille boss Roberto De Zerbi commented on the heated nature of the game, saying: 'The match was heated, it's good that it's like that... We should have been more aggressive from the start.' He also noted that both teams received six bookings each.
Aston Villa went on to beat Villarreal 2-0 in their final pre-season game, with striker Ollie Watkins praising the team's preparations. 'I really enjoyed the game and it’s been a good pre-season for us,' Watkins said. Villa begin their Premier League campaign against Newcastle United.
