Javier Mascherano has resigned as manager of Inter Miami, just months after leading the team to their first Major League Soccer title. The club announced the departure on Friday, citing personal reasons.
Mascherano's entire coaching staff will also leave the club. Sporting director Guillermo Hoyos has been appointed as interim head coach.
In a statement, Mascherano thanked the organisation and players, saying he would carry the memory of the club's first star with him. The Argentine took over ahead of the 2025 season and, alongside former Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi, guided Miami to an MLS Cup victory over Vancouver Whitecaps.
However, the title defence has been inconsistent, with two draws in the opening matches at the new Nu Stadium, though Miami have won three of five league games. The campaign suffered a setback with elimination from the CONCACAF Champions Cup in the round of 16 against Nashville SC last month.
Mascherano also faced significant squad changes since the title win. Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba retired, while Luís Suárez was benched after the signing of Germán Berterame, who has struggled for form.
