Manchester United Defender Martínez Handed Three-Match Suspension

Manchester United's Lisandro Martínez is set to serve a three-game ban after being sent off for violent conduct during a Premier League match against Leeds United. The incident, which involved Martínez pulling the hair of Leeds striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin, has sparked significant controversy and criticism from United's interim manager Michael Carrick.

Carrick Brands Decision 'Shocking' and Considers Appeal

Michael Carrick expressed outrage at the decision, describing the red card as "shocking" and indicating that the club may lodge an appeal. The incident occurred in the 56th minute of Monday night's match at Old Trafford, with referee Paul Tierney upgrading the offence to a red card after reviewing footage on the pitchside monitor.

"The arm is in the face of Lisandro and he is off balance and grappling," Carrick explained. "He goes to touch his shirt and gets a red card for it. It is not aggressive, there is no jolt, no tug. We have got to be careful where the game is going. It is a shocking decision, absolutely shocking."

Carrick emphasized the distinction between incidental contact and deliberate aggression, stating: "I know he touched his hair. There is a difference to really aggressively touching it." When questioned about a potential appeal, Carrick responded: "I am going to have to discuss it but I think it is a bad decision."

Defensive Crisis Looms for Manchester United

The suspension creates a significant defensive headache for Carrick as United prepare for crucial upcoming fixtures. Martínez will miss matches against Chelsea, Brentford, and Liverpool, while captain Harry Maguire may also be unavailable for the Chelsea encounter.

Maguire missed the Leeds defeat after receiving a straight red card during United's previous match against Bournemouth on March 20th. The England defender has subsequently been charged by the Football Association with "improper conduct" for allegedly directing abusive language toward the fourth official following his dismissal.

United will learn Maguire's fate before their trip to Stamford Bridge, potentially leaving Carrick without both first-choice centre-backs for a critical Premier League fixture.

Carrick Questions Earlier Incident in Leeds Defeat

The interim manager also raised concerns about Leeds' opening goal, claiming that Calvert-Lewin had impeded United defender Leny Yoro in the buildup to Noah Okafor's fifth-minute strike.

"The goal, Leny Yoro gets a forearm smash in the back of the head," Carrick asserted. "I don't know how that doesn't get overturned. That first goal shouldn't stand. The first one, he has led with his arm, I don't know how you don't look at it."

The 2-1 defeat marked Carrick's first loss at Old Trafford since taking over from Ruben Amorim in January, ending what had been an impressive home record for the interim manager.

Farke Celebrates Historic Leeds Victory

While United lamented the officiating decisions, Leeds manager Daniel Farke celebrated what he described as an "amazing" victory - the club's first league win at Old Trafford in 45 years.

"I feel tired, relieved, proud of the boys," Farke said following the historic result. "The first league win here in over 40 years is amazing."

The victory provided a significant boost to Leeds' Premier League campaign while exposing defensive vulnerabilities for Manchester United that will be tested further during Martínez's suspension period.
