Manchester United do not need to look far to find Kobbie Mainoo's ideal midfield partner, with Bruno Fernandes proving to be the perfect foil for the academy graduate. Since Michael Carrick took over as interim manager in January, Mainoo has flourished, and Fernandes has produced his best form when playing alongside the 21-year-old.
Of Fernandes' 19 Premier League assists this season, the majority have come with Mainoo on the pitch. Mainoo's ability to retain possession and pass accurately allows Fernandes to operate as a natural No. 10, focusing on creating chances rather than deeper midfield duties.
The preferred midfield trio of Fernandes, Mainoo, and Casemiro has only been consistently available since January. While Casemiro's departure is expected, necessitating at least one new signing, the partnership between Fernandes and Mainoo is one United should prioritise preserving.
Mainoo recently signed a new five-year contract worth £120,000 per week, securing his future at the club. Fernandes, meanwhile, has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia, but his importance to the team has never been clearer as he approaches the Premier League's all-time assist record.
