Man Utd's Ethan Wheatley: From Nutmegging Rashford to League One Goal Drought
Man Utd's Ethan Wheatley: From Rashford Nutmeg to Goal Drought

From Training Ground Triumph to Third-Tier Trials

Ethan Wheatley, a Manchester United academy starlet, once made headlines for a cheeky moment in training that left established forward Marcus Rashford red-faced. In October 2024, during a first-team session ahead of a Europa League match against Fenerbahce, the then-18-year-old striker received a pass with Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee closing in. With a deft flick, Wheatley nutmegged Rashford, sending the ball through the England international's legs.

The incident, captured on camera, showed Rashford momentarily stepping away with his head in his hands before sharing a laugh with teammates, highlighting the camaraderie within the squad. This flash of skill seemed to signal big things for Wheatley, who had already become United's 250th academy graduate to debut for the first team in April 2024, featuring in a 4-2 win over Sheffield United.

A Promising Start Derailed by Loan Struggles

Despite that early promise, Wheatley has since faced challenges in cementing a regular spot at Old Trafford. Over the past two seasons, he has been sent out on loan three times, with mixed results. His first move came in January 2025 to Walsall in League Two, where he managed only four appearances without scoring.

In August 2025, he joined Northampton Town in League One on a season-long loan, becoming a regular and netting three goals in 25 appearances across all competitions. However, Manchester United recalled him in January 2026 before loaning him to another third-tier club, Bradford City, for the remainder of the campaign.

Northampton manager Kevin Nolan expressed disappointment at losing Wheatley, praising his development during the loan spell. "We are disappointed Ethan has been recalled but we are proud of the work we have done with him and believe he leaves us a far better player than he arrived," Nolan said. "I know he enjoyed himself here, and I know Manchester United were pleased with how the loan went."

Current Goal Drought and Future Prospects

Wheatley's time at Bradford City has proven less fruitful, with the 20-year-old yet to score in 11 league outings as of early 2026. Bradford's Antoni Sarcevic commented on the striker's barren run, stating, "Ethan's a young lad who is finding his feet in the EFL. I still think Ethan is doing brilliantly for us. I know he'll pride himself on goals but I think what he gives to us is really good. The goals will come if he keeps going."

In contrast, Marcus Rashford, who was on the receiving end of Wheatley's nutmeg, has flourished during his own loan spell at Barcelona in the 2025-26 season. Rashford has rediscovered his form, registering 10 goals and 13 assists in 39 appearances, earning a recall to the England squad for the 2026 World Cup. He has expressed a desire to stay in Spain long-term, though his future depends on Barcelona triggering a £26 million purchase option.

Wheatley's journey underscores the unpredictable path of young football talents, from training ground highlights to the harsh realities of competitive leagues. As he continues to seek his footing in League One, his early moment with Rashford remains a poignant reminder of his potential.
