Manchester United's Goalkeeper Exodus: Bayindir Agrees Besiktas Move as Summer Overhaul Looms
Man Utd's Bayindir Agrees Besiktas Transfer in Summer Shake-Up

Manchester United Face Goalkeeping Crisis as Bayindir Seals Besiktas Exit

Manchester United are bracing for a significant summer transfer window, with back-up goalkeeper Altay Bayindir reportedly agreeing to leave the club for Turkish side Besiktas. This development has prompted a major rethink of the Red Devils' plans, as they confront a potential exodus in the goalkeeping department.

Bayindir's Frustration Leads to Turkish Return

According to Turkish outlet Fanatik, the 27-year-old shot-stopper has already agreed personal terms with Besiktas, a move strongly linked since January. Bayindir joined United from Fenerbahce in September 2023 for a fee of £4.3 million but has made just 17 appearances in two and a half years, often languishing behind Andre Onana and Senne Lammens in the pecking order.

His situation worsened after the £18.2 million signing of Lammens from Royal Antwerp in September, which relegated Bayindir to the bench. Despite a positive start to the 2025/26 season under manager Ruben Amorim, where he played six Premier League games, he has been rooted to the sidelines since a 3-1 defeat to Brentford on September 27.

Summer Overhaul: Onana and Heaton Also on the Move

The pending departure of Bayindir is compounded by United's desire to sell Andre Onana permanently. Onana, currently on loan at Trabzonspor with 26 appearances, has two years left on his contract but is reportedly not ready to give up on the club. However, ESPN reports that his wages will increase significantly if United qualify for the Champions League, making his exit a priority.

Additionally, veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton, aged 39, sees his contract expire at the end of June. This means three goalkeepers could leave Old Trafford this summer, leaving Lammens as the undisputed No.1 but requiring support.

Transfer Strategy and Financial Implications

United chiefs, including chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox, are now reassessing their summer plans. While signing a central midfielder remains the top priority, the goalkeeping reshuffle has forced them to consider bringing in another keeper. It has been suggested that the club could turn to the free agent market to meet this need without breaking the bank.

Bayindir's contract runs until June 2027, meaning United will collect a small transfer fee for his sale. This, along with potential sales of Onana and other loanees like Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund, is hoped to finance the arrival of a top-class midfielder. The club aims to use these funds to bolster their squad ahead of a crucial season.

Impact on United's Summer Window

The agreement with Besiktas for Bayindir is expected to be announced once the season ends, with United not standing in his way. This move highlights the broader challenges at Old Trafford, where player dissatisfaction and strategic missteps are forcing a rapid overhaul. As the summer approaches, United must balance their ambitions with practical squad management to avoid further disruptions.
