Manchester United are reportedly closing in on a deal to bring Ole Gunnar Solskjaer back to Old Trafford as manager, just days after parting ways with Ruben Amorim. The club are said to be working on an agreement with the Norwegian, whose contract signing has been delayed until later this week.
Amorim was dismissed on Monday after a 14-month tenure that ended with a 1-1 draw against Leeds United on Sunday. The result left United sixth in the Premier League, three points adrift of the top four and with only four points separating them from Crystal Palace in 14th. Darren Fletcher has taken interim charge for Wednesday's match at Burnley.
Solskjaer, who managed United from 2018 to 2021 and most recently coached Besiktas, has been without a club since leaving Turkey in August. Norwegian outlet VG report that the two parties are in talks, with a potential announcement pencilled in for Friday. However, Solskjaer is expected to attend the funeral of Norwegian coaching legend Age Hareide in Molde on Thursday, pushing back any finalisation.
It remains unclear whether Solskjaer would take over on a permanent or short-term basis. He previously served as interim before being given the role permanently, guiding United to second and third-place finishes and a Europa League final. United face Brighton in the FA Cup third round on Sunday, though it is not yet confirmed who will be in the dugout.
