Ruben Amorim has suffered a blow to his transfer plans after Nuno Mendes decided against a move to Manchester United. The Portugal international had emerged as one of United's leading targets for the January window, with Amorim keen to strengthen at left-back given Luke Shaw's injury problems and Tyrell Malacia's lack of favour.
Mendes previously played under Amorim at Sporting Lisbon, where he helped the club secure a Primeira Liga and Taca da Liga double in 2021 before joining Paris Saint-Germain that summer. Although he has enjoyed success in Paris, this season has been more challenging, with limited game time in Ligue 1 prompting speculation about a departure.
However, according to L'Équipe, the 21-year-old has 'closed the door' on leaving the Parc des Princes and now sees his future in the French capital. His entourage believes he could sign a new contract to reinforce his commitment to PSG. Manager Luis Enrique is understood to have played an instrumental role in convincing Mendes to stay, insisting the left-back remains central to his plans.
Speaking on Friday, Enrique said: "I find him on the same line as always. It's a question for him, not for me. I can see him doing very well." He added that having two players per position is almost impossible, but that the squad is in one of its best moments.
Amorim has recently played down expectations of new arrivals at Old Trafford, prioritising work with the existing squad. "I don't remember saying clearly that I want new players," he said ahead of the win over Arsenal. "Our idea is always to keep the best players and the players we build for this club, but we know what position the club is in at the moment."
