Chelsea are dealing with several key injuries ahead of their Premier League return against Bournemouth on Saturday October 10. A drop in form under Xabi Alonso has coincided with the absence of important players, but the club could receive a number of boosts this week as some stars are assessed.
Joao Pedro and Cole Palmer updates
Joao Pedro, Chelsea's reigning player of the season, rescued a draw against Hull in his last appearance but subsequently picked up an injury. He missed the 3-0 defeat to Brentford before the international break and withdrew from Carlo Ancelotti's Brazil squad. Standard Sport understands he has been receiving treatment from a knee specialist to speed up his comeback, with initial reports suggesting he could be out for up to four weeks. His potential return date is later in October.
Cole Palmer pulled out of the most recent England squad for the start of the 2026/27 Nations League, leading Thomas Tuchel to lament that the player "misses way too many camps". Palmer, hampered by a long-term groin injury last season, reportedly went abroad on holiday and has been working on his fitness with a rehabilitation coach. There is hope he will be available against Bournemouth.
Caicedo, James and debut hopefuls
Moises Caicedo has played only 14 minutes this season due to a persistent calf issue, limited to one substitute cameo against Brighton. He was not called up by Ecuador for friendlies against South Korea, Japan and Panama to help him fully recover. Alonso suggested he was close before Brentford, and he should be in contention for Bournemouth if there have been no setbacks.
Captain Reece James missed the Brentford defeat with another hamstring injury and was unavailable for England selection. Alonso said before that game that James only just missed out, so he is expected to return against Bournemouth. Summer signing Marco Palestra, who has yet to make his competitive debut due to a muscle injury, has been training fully at Cobham and is poised to finally return. Jamie Gittens, however, was taken off with an ankle injury in England's Under-21s qualifier against Kazakhstan and was later spotted on crutches; his return date is unknown pending further assessment.
Emegha and Penders nearing returns
Emmanuel Emegha has also yet to make his competitive Chelsea debut due to a hamstring injury sustained after scoring in a behind-closed-doors friendly win against Bromley in July. He was included by Alonso in a group of players that could be ready for Brentford, but that did not happen. He is now pushing to be involved against Bournemouth.
Back-up goalkeeper Mike Penders suffered a quad injury in training with Belgium and was omitted from Mark van Bommel's squads to face Italy and France. He returned to the bench against Turkey and is expected to back up Manchester United's Senne Lammens in Paris on Monday night. A few unnamed sidelined stars played in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Portsmouth at Cobham on Saturday, which the hosts lost 2-0.
