United lost their opening pre-season game 1-0 to Wrexham in Helsinki, with Sam Smith scoring the only goal. Head coach Michael Carrick gave minutes to several senior players and handed a debut to summer signing Andrey Santos.

Carrick may again field two entirely different teams in each half, as he did against Wrexham, with World Cup stars still returning at different times. Rosenborg have doubts over striker Dino Islamovic, who missed their last match, but are otherwise at full strength.
