Supporters attending Manchester United's match against Bournemouth at Old Trafford today face significant travel disruption, with Metrolink tram lines shut down and rail services affected by severe weather.
The Premier League fixture kicks off at 2pm, with a sell-out crowd of more than 74,000 expected. Engineering works have closed the Metrolink's Altrincham, Trafford Park and Eccles lines for a two-week period, meaning there is no direct tram service from the city centre to the stadium.
Storm Boelo disrupts rail network
Torrential rain and gale-force winds from Storm Boelo have also hit the wider rail network. Trains from London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly face sudden cancellations, compounded by a shortage of train crew.
The Met Office has issued weather warnings, with rail disruption across England likely. Avanti West Coast strongly recommends avoiding travel on the West Coast Main Line north of Preston on Sunday, with a reduced timetable in operation.
Alternative transport options
For those using the remaining Metrolink network, the Airport and East Didsbury lines are running on a heavily reduced schedule. Local transport bosses advise commuters from these areas to catch a service to Firswood instead.
Replacement shuttle buses have been organised at a cost of £2, departing frequently from Altrincham Interchange and Piccadilly Gardens to take ticket-holders to the match.
Official guidance issued
The Bee Network published full guidance stating: "To support football fans travelling to and from Old Trafford, a range of alternative public transport options will be available, including replacement bus services, Bee Network bus services, ticket acceptance on selected rail services and a programme of dedicated football shuttle buses. Allow plenty of time for travel; we suggest departing an hour earlier than normal to ensure you arrive at the ground on time."
