Manchester United's search for a new manager has resumed after Ruben Amorim's dismissal, with former Barcelona boss Xavi emerging as a potential candidate. The 45-year-old Spaniard has been without a club since leaving Barcelona in 2024 and has previously expressed interest in managing in England.
United confirmed Amorim's sacking on Monday, following a 1-1 draw at Leeds and post-match comments criticising board members. Xavi, who has a prior connection with United CEO Omar Berrada from their time at Barcelona, reportedly met with Berrada in 2024 when Erik ten Hag was dismissed.
Speaking to The Athletic last year, Xavi said: 'I'd love to work in the Premier League, because I love the passion there. In Spain, it's too much about the result.' He added that he seeks a long-term project, aligning with United's stated commitment to a sustained vision.
Amorim's tenure saw United finish 15th in the Premier League last season, their worst ever, though he did reach the Europa League final. Reports suggest discontent among board members, including director of scouting Christopher Vivell and director of football Jason Wilcox, over his approach.
Xavi favours a back-four formation that can shift to a three-man defence, which may suit a squad built under Amorim. With United's hierarchy potentially reigniting talks, Xavi remains an interested party for the Old Trafford role.
