Manchester United are reportedly prepared to delay their interest in Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba until next summer, with the Seagulls valuing the 21-year-old at around £100 million. Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler has expressed confidence that Baleba will remain at the club, despite the player missing pre-season friendlies with a knee injury.
United have already spent close to £200 million on their attack, making a marquee midfield signing difficult to finance this window. Manager Ruben Amorim has acknowledged the need for midfield depth, with Manuel Ugarte yet to fully convince since his arrival and Casemiro no longer considered a reliable starter in the Premier League. Kobbie Mainoo has been used in a deeper role during pre-season, while Toby Collyer has joined West Brom on loan.
According to reports, United are now exploring a cheaper alternative, with Sporting Lisbon captain Morten Hjulmand emerging as a potential option. The 26-year-old Denmark international previously worked with Amorim in Portugal and is thought to be available for around £50 million, half of Brighton's valuation of Baleba.
Hjulmand gained attention at Euro 2024 when he scored a stunning equaliser against England from 30 yards. Amorim, who managed both Hjulmand and Ugarte at Sporting, has highlighted their contrasting styles, noting that Hjulmand excels at reading the game and anticipating moves, while Ugarte possesses greater speed in finding players across the pitch.
It remains to be seen whether United will make a formal move before the transfer deadline, but Hjulmand's profile could offer a different dimension to their midfield. The club may revisit their interest in Baleba at the end of the season, but a new signing this summer appears necessary to address their current lack of depth.
