Ruben Amorim has reportedly agreed to become AC Milan's new manager and is already planning a move for two of his former Sporting CP players. The ex-Manchester United boss is targeting Francisco Trincao and Morten Hjulmand, with Italian media describing the pair as two of his favourites.
The 41-year-old was dismissed by United five months ago following a 1-1 draw at Leeds, with reports at the time citing his emotional and inconsistent behaviour as factors in the decision. Now back in management, he is keen to reunite with the Sporting duo in Serie A.
However, securing both players will not be straightforward. Trincao has a release clause of around £51m, while Hjulmand's buyout price is set at £69m, though an agreement with Sporting allows the captain to leave for approximately £35m. That would bring the combined cost to roughly £86m.
Amorim previously coached both players during his time in Portugal, giving him a potential edge. Hjulmand spent a year under him, scoring four goals and assisting four times in the final full season as Sporting won the league title. Trincao, who has 47 goals and 51 assists in 208 appearances for the club, offers versatility across the forward line.
Competition is fierce, with Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea linked to Trincao, while Atletico Madrid and Manchester United are also interested in Hjulmand. A report from Correio da Manha claims Michael Carrick's side are leading the race for the midfielder, meaning Amorim may have to fight his former club for the signing.
Amorim has expressed his enthusiasm for the Milan challenge, saying: "There are ambitions that stay with you throughout your career, and coaching AC Milan has always been one of mine. I know exactly what this club means: history, prestige and an extraordinary fanbase around the world. It is a challenge I embrace with pride and enthusiasm."
