Man Utd's Managerial Search Continues Despite Carrick's Strong Interim Start
Man Utd Still Seek Permanent Manager After Carrick's Interim Run

Manchester United are reportedly determined to appoint a permanent head coach when the season concludes, despite Michael Carrick's encouraging start in his interim role. The former United midfielder took over from Ruben Amorim in early January and has guided the team to four victories in his first five matches.

Carrick's Interim Success and United's Stance

Following wins against Manchester City, Arsenal, Fulham, and Tottenham, United's winning streak was halted by a defeat to West Ham on Tuesday night. The Red Devils currently occupy fourth place in the Premier League, positioning them strongly for Champions League qualification.

Michael Carrick addressed his situation ahead of last weekend's victory over Tottenham, stating, "Nothing's changed, no. To be honest, it's not going to change what I do or how I feel about it. I think I'm fully aware of the role I'm doing here and the responsibility I've got."

He added, "We want to be successful. I want the club to be successful beyond the end of the season: if that's me, if that's somebody else. At this stage, I can't control that, and we'll see what happens."

Tuchel's Contract Extension Alters Managerial Landscape

United's search for a permanent manager has been complicated by Thomas Tuchel's decision to extend his contract as England manager through to Euro 2028. The German, who took charge of the Three Lions in January 2025, was previously considered a top target for the Old Trafford role.

According to reports, Tuchel views the opportunity to lead England in a tournament jointly hosted with Wales, Scotland, and the Republic of Ireland as a unique and unrepeatable chance, prompting his commitment to the national team.

Alternative Candidates and Summer Priorities

With Tuchel now out of contention, Manchester United are evaluating other candidates for the managerial position. Names under consideration include:

  • Mauricio Pochettino, who has been linked with United in the past and is currently preparing for the World Cup with the USMNT.
  • Luis Enrique, who is now expected to remain at Paris Saint-Germain.

Despite Carrick's promising start, which has sparked discussions about making his role permanent, Sky Sports indicate that United do not currently view him as the leading candidate for the long-term position.

The club's summer plans include squad strengthening, but securing a new manager remains the top priority as they aim to build on their Champions League qualification prospects and compete for major honours next season.
