Manchester United were humbled by AC Milan, shipping four goals in their final pre-season match in Wroclaw, Poland. Michael Carrick's side led twice but suffered a second-half collapse against the Italian club.
United's early promise fades
United started brightly, taking the lead after just two minutes when Bruno Fernandes' whipped cross found Harry Maguire, who headed home. The 20-time Premier League champions controlled much of the first half, but a defensive mix-up allowed Samuel Chukwueze to equalise deep into the opening period. Fernandes then missed from 12 yards just before the break.
In the second half, Patrick Dorgu restored United's lead shortly after the restart, but the three-time European champions conceded twice within 10 minutes, first to Alphadjo Cisse and then to Goncalo Ramos. Ruben Loftus-Cheek added a fourth, sprinting through a gaping hole in United's defence.
Player ratings: Standouts and struggles
Senne Lammens - 6: Made some solid saves from half chances, including one sharp stop from close range. Could have been more aware for Milan's first and let a ball cross the face for the second, but neither was really his fault.
Ayden Heaven - 6: Sleepy for Milan's first but overall pretty solid. Should play plenty of football this season.
Harry Maguire - 5: Rose highest to head home early, but looked lost for the equaliser and stood like a statue for two second-half goals.
Luke Shaw - 3: You'd be forgiven for thinking this was his first-ever match as a professional. For a player of his quality, it's remarkable how lost he looked. The fourth highlighted why United are desperate for Lewis Hall's signature.
Noussair Mazraoui - 6: Managed an hour and wasn't exactly to blame for United's defensive shortcomings.
Andrey Santos - 5: Too sloppy for Milan's goal, having clattered into a team-mate. Settled down after that but still has plenty to learn.
Bruno Fernandes - 5: Delivered a delicious ball for Maguire's opener but was haphazard after that. Never looked like converting the penalty and was weak in a 50/50 that led to the first-half equaliser.
Youri Tielemans - 6: His surging run earned the first-half penalty but struggled to have much impact after that.
Patrick Dorgu - 7: Could find himself playing plenty at left-wing given United's deficiencies. If he's taking goals as comfortably as that, Carrick could do a lot worse.
Matheus Cunha - 5: A bit of a passenger, only 13 touches and none of them were shots. Needs a big improvement to be United's leading forward.
Amad - 5: The Ivorian wasn't anywhere near as influential as in other outings.
Substitutes' impact
Diogo Dalot - 6: By no means the worst of the second-half subs. Should come straight into the starting XI for next weekend's opener vs Hull City.
Lisandro Martinez - 5: Allowed Loftus-Cheek to breeze past for the fourth, but can be excused as he hasn't been in training long since returning from the World Cup.
Bryan Mbeumo - 5: United needed a spark up front when he entered, but it didn't really arrive.
Shea Lacey - 6: A proper livewire whenever he picked up the ball. Has an eye for a pass and is always looking to drive forward. Could be a useful asset this term.
Marcus Rashford - 6: The crazy thing is, he is probably still United's best attacker. Granted, the former Barcelona loanee didn't showcase that fully vs Milan, but there were glimpses. Carrick should be rolling out the red carpet to keep him at the club.
Kobbie Mainoo - 6: Might have feared for his place given the midfield additions, but today showed there will still be minutes for the effervescent midfielder.
