Man Utd injury boost as De Ligt, Sesko return to training

Manchester United received positive injury news ahead of the new Premier League season as Matthijs de Ligt and Benjamin Sesko took part in an open training session on Tuesday.

Sesko and De Ligt step up recovery

Sesko had been sidelined throughout pre-season after sustaining a shin injury against Liverpool in May. It was hoped he would be fit for at least one friendly, but he did not recover in time. The 23-year-old could now be in contention for Saturday's Premier League opener away at Hull, with the club saying on manutd.com that he "will hopefully be available soon for selection."

De Ligt had not seen competitive action since November 2025, when he suffered a back problem that ultimately required surgery. The Dutch defender was also on the grass at Carrington on Tuesday as he builds back to full fitness.

Mount and Ugarte doubts

Injury-plagued midfielder Mason Mount, however, is a major doubt for the Hull match after missing the training session. United boss Michael Carrick had said Mount's absence from their last two friendlies was precautionary after he picked up a knock against Paris St Germain on August 8. He has now missed two matches, and it remains unclear whether the issue is more serious than first thought.

It is another frustrating setback for Mount, who has struggled for fitness since joining from Chelsea in 2023. He had impressed in a deeper midfield role alongside Andrey Santos early in the summer, but fans will have to wait to see that partnership in competitive action.

The Red Devils will definitely be without midfielder Manuel Ugarte, who sustained knee ligament damage playing for Uruguay at the World Cup and is due to miss much of the coming campaign.
