Man Utd fan's haircut challenge delayed after West Ham draw

A Manchester United fan known as 'The United Strand' has been left heartbroken after his haircut challenge was postponed following a 1-1 draw with West Ham United. Frank Ilett, who has not cut his hair in 493 days, needed five consecutive wins to visit the barber. The Red Devils had secured victories over Manchester City, Arsenal, Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur, but the draw at the London Stadium reset his tally.

Tomas Soucek put West Ham ahead in the 50th minute, and despite a stoppage-time equaliser from Benjamin Sesko, United could not secure the win. Ilett, watching on a Kick live stream, was visibly upset as the match ended. He will now need United to win their next five matches—against Everton, Crystal Palace, Newcastle United, Aston Villa and Bournemouth—to finally shave his head.

The challenge began in November 2023, and Ilett plans to donate his hair to the Little Princess Trust. Speaking after the match, he said: 'It's tough. We go again, I guess. The hair gets a bit longer for the charity.' The earliest he can now book his haircut is March 20, provided United win their next five games. The draw also marked Michael Carrick's first game without a victory as interim head coach.
