Manchester United's board is reportedly divided over the future of manager Michael Carrick, with one executive particularly keen on Brighton's Fabian Hurzeler as a potential successor. The club is just two points above the relegation zone after a winless run of six games in all competitions.
According to reports, an unnamed executive 'really appreciates' the Brighton manager and continues to raise his name in private discussions. The pressure on Carrick intensified after a 2-0 Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid, followed by a draw with Leeds United at the weekend.
Executive's admiration for Hurzeler
Fabrizio Romano suggests that while the United hierarchy is not in talks with any alternative manager and Carrick retains their full backing, one club executive is particularly keen on Hurzeler and mentions his name when the board examines the managerial position.
The executive's case was strengthened by Brighton's emphatic 5-0 win over Crystal Palace, which lifted Hurzeler's side to third in the Premier League table. Brighton have also won five of their opening seven league fixtures this campaign, following consecutive eighth-placed finishes.
Other candidates and recent struggles
The report also indicates that Hurzeler is not the sole name under consideration, with United aware that Antonio Conte might be willing to accept a position mid-season.
Hurzeler has guided Brighton to four victories from six encounters against United since his appointment in 2024. Brighton currently top the Conference League table after a 4-0 win over Kauno Zalgiris.
United were jeered by their own fans after conceding a stoppage-time equaliser to Tottenham Hotspur, with the visitors down to ten men. Lisandro Martinez added to the criticism with a post-match interview criticising the club and Jason Wilcox.
