League Two side Grimsby Town produced a famous 12-11 penalty shootout victory over Manchester United to knock Ruben Amorim's side out of the Carabao Cup at Blundell Park on Wednesday. Bryan Mbeumo missed the decisive spot-kick, sending the ball off the crossbar as home fans celebrated a historic upset.
This was United's first appearance in the second round of the competition since 2014, when they lost 4-0 at MK Dons. Grimsby took the lead through Charles Vernam, assisted by former Republic of Ireland Under-21 international Darragh Burns, before Tyrell Warren capitalised on a mistake by United goalkeeper Andre Onana to double the advantage.
Substitute Mbeumo pulled one back for the visitors, and Harry Maguire's stoppage-time header forced a 2-2 draw to take the match to penalties. Onana saved a spot-kick from new signing Clarke Oduour, and Matheus Cunha missed the chance to win it for United, but the shootout continued until Mbeumo's miss sealed Grimsby's triumph.
Elsewhere, Everton eased into the third round with a 2-0 win over Mansfield, thanks to goals from Charly Alcaraz and substitute Beto. Brighton thrashed Oxford United 6-0, with Stefanos Tzimas scoring a debut double, while Fulham beat Bristol City 2-0, with Raul Jimenez forcing an own goal and adding a second.
