Manchester United's football leadership would favour a permanent appointment over another caretaker manager if Michael Carrick is dismissed, while co-chairman Avram Glazer has said the club's commercial strength does not depend on silverware.
United returned to winning ways in midweek, coming from 2-0 down against Roma to win in the Champions League. The result eased the pressure ahead of Sunday's home fixture against Aston Villa, but Carrick's future remains a subject of debate.
Permanent appointment preferred
According to Sky Sports, Jason Wilcox and Omar Berrada, who oversee United's football operations, would prefer a permanent appointment rather than a temporary solution should the club decide to part ways with Carrick. The report suggests United's leadership would take a long-term view, recognising the importance of the next managerial decision.
The club has developed a pattern of appointing caretaker bosses in recent times, reports the Mirror. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer held the position before taking the role permanently. Following his dismissal in November 2021, Ralf Rangnick stepped in for the remainder of that campaign. Carrick himself served as caretaker manager during the latter part of last season.
Glazer comments on commercial strength
Speaking to investors at Deutsche Bank's Sports Investment Conference in London, Avram Glazer drew parallels between United and franchises like the New York Yankees and Dallas Cowboys, suggesting they can sustain global appeal despite a lack of on-pitch success. According to The Athletic, the remarks highlight ownership's conviction that United's brand value remains strong even as scrutiny intensifies on its leadership.
The comments are unlikely to sit well with United supporters, who revived their demonstrations against the Glazers, minority stakeholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe and club officials during the win over Roma.
