Manchester United have contacted former France manager Didier Deschamps as they prepare for the possible sacking of head coach Michael Carrick, according to Foot Mercato. The club's decision-makers are scouring the market for a replacement should current head coach Michael Carrick be dismissed.
Contact made with Deschamps
The report claims United have sounded out Deschamps, who has not managed at club level since leaving Marseille in 2012. However, the 58-year-old Frenchman is said to have no interest in taking the role at Old Trafford.
Deschamps spent 14 years in charge of the France national team, winning the 2018 World Cup and finishing as runner-up at Euro 2016. He also won the Nations League with Les Bleus in 2021. His France contract was not renewed after the recent World Cup, in which his team lost in the semi-finals to Spain before losing the third-placed play-off 6-4 to England.
Carrick's position under threat
United's midweek Champions League win over Roma, a 3-2 victory after being 2-0 down at Old Trafford, has bought Carrick some favour with the fans. But if the Red Devils revert to the performance levels of their nine-match winless streak before beating Roma, the board could be forced to act.
Carrick appeared on the brink after humiliating back-to-back defeats to Como and Bournemouth. The 45-year-old will desperately hope the comeback victory against the Italians can spearhead a reinvigorated run of form.
Other candidates considered
Foot Mercato add that United have informally reached out to other managers, including Julian Nagelsmann and Unai Emery, who is set to sign a new long-term contract with Aston Villa.
Deschamps, who has also been linked with the Juventus job, has been a free agent since leaving the France role. He is open to offers but in no rush to decide his next move, and is prepared to wait until next summer before returning to the dugout, having been a contender for Real Madrid before Jose Mourinho returned to the Bernabeu.
