Manchester United have ended their pursuit of Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Carlos Baleba this summer, with the 21-year-old now prepared to wait for a potential move in the future. The Red Devils identified Baleba as their top target for the defensive midfield role but were unwilling to meet Brighton's valuation of around £120 million.
Talks between the clubs began earlier this month via intermediaries before progressing to direct contact. Brighton, however, made it clear they had no intention of selling the Cameroon international, and the £120 million price tag—exceeding the fee Chelsea paid for Moisés Caicedo in 2023—proved too steep for United.
Brighton manager Fabian Hürzeler expressed confidence that Baleba would remain at the Amex Stadium, stating he was 'very, very, very confident' about the player staying. 'Just my belief,' Hürzeler added when asked why. The Seagulls boss also noted that Baleba is 'in a really good place' and enjoying his time at the club.
Manchester United have already spent £207.5 million on three forwards—Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Šeško—and manager Ruben Amorim's priority remains strengthening the midfield, particularly the No. 6 role. Personal terms with Baleba would not have been an issue, as the player is willing to push for a move even if it means waiting until next year.
There is no suggestion that Baleba is unhappy at Brighton, and United accept that he is still developing after two seasons in the Premier League. The former Lille starlet will look to enhance his reputation over the coming campaign, with Hürzeler excited to continue working with him.
