Manchester United have already arranged a meeting to decide Michael Carrick's future as manager. The under-pressure boss was given two games to effectively save his job, overseeing a dramatic 3-2 comeback win over Roma followed by a chaotic 4-4 draw with Aston Villa.
However, the point against Unai Emery's side was not enough to lift United out of the relegation zone, with Carrick becoming the first manager in 40 years to guide the club into the bottom three of the top flight.
Wilcox to lead talks at Carrington
According to TEAMtalk, director of football Jason Wilcox will discuss Carrick's future at the club's Carrington training ground. A decision is needed on whether the beleaguered boss will be given time to turn fortunes around or if a new face in the dugout is required.
The international break would offer any appointment the chance to settle into the role. Before the 4-4 draw with Villa, reports suggested Wilcox remained supportive of Carrick while also being an admirer of Eddie Howe. The report states that his decision will be final.
Potential replacements assessed
The club have reportedly assessed several potential alternatives, including Howe, former Bayern Munich and Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann, and ex-Chelsea and Tottenham head coach Antonio Conte. Mauricio Pochettino, who recently used a new contract with the USMNT, is being backed in the betting markets.
Speaking to NBC before the game, The Athletic's David Ornstein said there is a desire for Carrick to turn things around but also claimed that there remains no clear plan should the former midfielder get the boot. Ornstein said on Sunday: "Think the truth is, there isn't a firm plan here at Old Trafford for what to do if they were to make a change."
He added: "No doubt they would've had conversations with representatives in recent weeks, and they'll have more time to do so over the international break. I don't know of a clear alternative plan."
