Manchester United have internally approved an official bid for Newcastle defender Lewis Hall, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. The 21-year-old England international has emerged as a primary target as the club looks to strengthen at left-back.
United have been busy in the summer window after a 2025/26 season in which they played just 40 matches in total. Michael Carrick and INEOS have already brought in Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans to replace the departing Casemiro, while Karl Darlow arrived to bolster the goalkeeping department.
Hall seen as long-term successor to Shaw
The Red Devils view Hall as a potential long-term successor to Luke Shaw, who registered a fully-fit season, and are weighing up an initial offer in the region of £60m. Hall remains under contract at Newcastle until 2029, but considerable turmoil at St James' Park could create an opportunity for departure.
Newcastle have already lost Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and manager Eddie Howe in recent weeks, with Bruno Guimaraes expected to follow. However, the club have raised approximately £170m through player exits, a figure that could climb towards £250m if Guimaraes completes a move to Arsenal, meaning there is no financial necessity to sell Hall.
Alex Scott open to United move
United may also be poised to complete a third significant midfield addition, with Bournemouth's Alex Scott reportedly receptive to joining Carrick's side. The 22-year-old is attracting interest from Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal, and is understood to be weighing up all options with no obvious favourite emerging.
Chelsea recently saw a £64m bid rejected by Bournemouth. The Cherries are believed to value Scott at approximately £70m, though that figure could rise towards £80m given the level of competition for his signature.
United remain eager to add another central midfielder after their pursuit of Atalanta's Ederson collapsed, but their recent transfer business has generally focused on calculated, budget-conscious deals rather than headline signings.
