Manchester United have entered the race to sign RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, rivalling Newcastle United for the 22-year-old. Newcastle had appeared close to securing a deal, having submitted a second offer of £69.7m, potentially rising to £75m with add-ons. However, Manchester United made a rival bid on Tuesday, offering £65.2m guaranteed, which could rise to £73.8m, and believe the player prefers a move to Old Trafford.
Manchester United have been searching for a striker all summer, missing out on targets including Viktor Gyökeres, Hugo Ekitiké, and Liam Delap. They have already spent over £130m on Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, and may need to sell players such as Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho, or Tyrell Malacia to fund further signings.
Newcastle, meanwhile, are also in the market for forwards, with Alexander Isak keen to leave, ideally for Liverpool. Liverpool had a £110m bid for Isak rejected last week. Newcastle are negotiating with Brentford for Yoane Wissa and have long admired Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins. The club has faced several rejections from potential signings, including João Pedro and James Trafford.
Newcastle have signed Sweden winger Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest for £55m and goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale on loan from Southampton. Ramsdale's arrival may allow Martin Dubravka to leave, with Burnley interested. Manager Eddie Howe is also seeking a right-sided centre-half, with Crystal Palace's Marc Guéhi and Marseille's Leonardo Balerdi on his shortlist.
