Manchester United are investigating a possible move for Arsenal's Myles Lewis-Skelly as the club weigh up exploiting the Gunners' transfer situation to land the versatile youngster.
The 19-year-old struggled for regular playing time across much of last season, but went on to start Arsenal's Champions League final defeat and helped the north London club secure the Premier League title. United have previously shown interest in Lewis-Skelly, and could now revisit that interest this summer, according to the Independent.
Arsenal transfer business could pave the way
Arsenal prefer to keep Lewis-Skelly, but sealing big-money deals for Newcastle's Bruno Guimaraes and Real Madrid's Vinicius Junior would leave the champions needing to balance the books. Lewis-Skelly is not among the players Arsenal would actively look to sell, with Reiss Nelson, Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli more favourable exits. Christian Norgaard is already expected to join Everton.
Lewis-Skelly would offer Michael Carrick's side a versatile option in two areas United are looking to strengthen. The club are still targeting a third midfielder after signing Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, and would welcome greater depth at left-back, where only Luke Shaw is available.
United also tracking Lewis Hall
United are also exploring a move for Newcastle defender Lewis Hall. The former Chelsea youngster is said to be open to the prospect as the Magpies face losing Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and, in all likelihood, Bruno Guimaraes this summer.
Lewis-Skelly on his Arsenal future
In May, Lewis-Skelly refused to be drawn on his Arsenal future as he focused on helping the Gunners win silverware. He opened up about shutting out the noise during his struggles for game time last season.
"It was tough initially," he said. "But, for me, I pride myself on having mental strength. Sport is not one pathway, because there are ups and downs. And it's how you bounce back from that, and how you are in those moments when you face adversity. That is what defines you.
"I spoke with my family and friends. I just told them: 'I don't want to hear all the noise that is coming from social media. Let me stay in this moment, let me continue to face this adversity and let me come out the other side of it'."
"For me, it is just always being prepared, always feeling like I prepare as a starter - because you never know when your time will come. Luckily enough for me, it came against Fulham. I feel like I took my opportunity and just helped the team out as much as I can."
