Manchester United have reportedly sounded out Julian Nagelsmann as a potential replacement for head coach Michael Carrick, whose position has come under increasing scrutiny after a 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como on Wednesday night.
The loss stretched United's winless run across all competitions to seven games, and calls for Carrick's dismissal grew louder on social media following the result. According to talkSPORT, the club now appears to be preparing for life without him.
Nagelsmann Emerges as Candidate
The report states that Carrick is now under immense pressure, and as speculation surrounding his future intensifies, Nagelsmann has emerged as a candidate to replace him in the dugout at Old Trafford. Nagelsmann, a former Bayern Munich manager, is currently a free agent after stepping down from his role as Germany boss following a disappointing World Cup campaign in the summer.
It is understood that the 39-year-old has admirers within the Red Devils hierarchy, as he was considered before Carrick was appointed on a permanent basis in May.
Other Options Considered
In addition, talkSPORT claim that Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler is seen as an option by United, as he also has admirers at the club. However, they are yet to express interest in Antonio Conte, who has made it clear he would be open to taking charge.
Carrick's Reaction
Carrick, meanwhile, admitted he was "really angry" about Manchester United's performance in their defeat by Como. "I'm bitterly disappointed," he said. "I'm frustrated, more than frustrated, I'm really angry to be honest. You've got to move on and think about what's next. For us to play in that way is not acceptable, it wasn't a good performance at all."
