Manchester United and Tottenham both made dismal starts to their Premier League campaigns, losing to Hull City and Brentford respectively, as the new season got under way.
United and Spurs beaten on opening day
United were beaten by returning heroes Hull City, while Spurs were undone by a superb Brentford side. The defeats instantly deflated any enthusiasm around both clubs' seasons.
Late goals decide Liverpool and City matches
Elsewhere, a late Liverpool goal earned them a point at St James' Park. Two late goals saw Enzo Maresca win his first Premier League game as Manchester City boss.
Arsenal ominous and other results
Arsenal looked ominous in their opener. There were also wins for Ipswich and Leeds, and the Thierno Barry golden boot campaign kicked off.
