Manchester United were handed a lifeline when Atletico Madrid had a second goal ruled out for handball during their Champions League clash in Madrid. United appeared to be heading 2-0 behind after Pablo Barrios opened the scoring inside the first minute.
Goal overturned after VAR review
However, referee Glenn Nyberg overturned the goal following an on-field review, ruling that Marcos Llorente had handled the ball during the build-up before Johnny Cardoso fired into the back of the net.
Former referee Mark Clattenburg was brought in to explain the decision, saying: "There's no doubt that the ball does touch the hand, it's deliberate because he doesn't score direct from that action, he's passed it to his team-mate so it has to be a deliberate action.
Referee explains the handball call
"The referee has to decide, is it deliberate or not. What the VAR's have done and the referees have discussed over the summer is, does the player get an advantage from the handball. Here, he does because he gets past the Manchester United defender."
"The action does take a movement towards the box so I wouldn't be surprised if this was disallowed for handball."
