Man United Approach Nagelsmann as Carrick Faces Pressure

Manchester United have approached Julian Nagelsmann about replacing Michael Carrick as manager, following a poor start to the season that has left the club with just two wins across the Premier League and Champions League. Wednesday night's 4-1 defeat to Champions League debutants Como extended United's winless run to seven matches in all competitions.

Nagelsmann Emerges as Candidate

According to talkSPORT, Nagelsmann has emerged as a candidate to succeed Carrick. The former Germany manager is available after stepping down from his national team role, and is said to have admirers within United. He featured prominently in the club's thinking before Carrick was appointed on a permanent basis, and is also reported to be open to taking the job.

The 39-year-old speaks perfect English and has previously worked with United's director of recruitment, Christopher Vivell, at RB Leipzig. Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler is also reportedly high on United's shortlist, though his recently signed long-term contract could leave the club facing a substantial compensation bill if they pursue the German.

Other Candidates and Carrick's Position

Antonio Conte and Eddie Howe are also available, with Conte having left Napoli in the summer. Former Newcastle manager Howe is regarded as a straightforward appointment given his free-agent status. Howe was previously favoured by former United sporting director Dan Ashworth, although minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe reportedly opposed a move.

While talkSPORT add that Carrick did not arrive at Carrington at his usual time of 7.30am on Thursday, he is still expected to oversee Sunday's Premier League clash with Bournemouth (2pm kick-off). Captain Bruno Fernandes has questioned the coaching staff's decision not to adopt a man-to-man press.

Carrick's Reaction

Carrick hinted at the scale of his anger over United's performance on Wednesday evening. "I'm bitterly disappointed," he said. "I'm frustrated, more than frustrated, I'm really angry to be honest. You've got to move on and think about what's next. For us to play in that way is not acceptable, it wasn't a good performance at all."
