Harry Maguire has admitted that Manchester United felt like they had fallen into a crisis again after their opening-day defeat to Hull City. The Reds were thoroughly second best at Hull last Saturday, leaving many to wonder if the pre-season optimism had been misplaced.
Five-star response at Old Trafford
United managed to answer their critics on Sunday as they thrashed Ipswich Town 5-2 at Old Trafford. Maguire's side did not have it all their own way, but the game turned on its head when the defender's strike deflected in off Jacob Greaves for an own goal. From there, it was the Bruno Fernandes show as he completed a hat-trick and set Bryan Mbeumo up to add gloss to the scoreline.
Maguire on the turnaround
Reflecting on the game and last week, Maguire told Sky Sports: "I thought we started the game really well and the goal knocked us back a lot. I must say, the defeat last week was tough to take and when you lose at this club, there's a load of noise and it feels like you're in a crisis again after one game."
"But no, when they scored the first goal, I think for five or 10 minutes we lost control of the game. We spoke about it at half time, we came out again and got control of it. In the second half, we know that we can score goals in any moment and we proved that and we could have scored more."
Three points and moving on
On the result, Maguire added: "Yeah it is massive. Last week was disappointing. We prepared all pre-season to go and win the game against Hull but unfortunately we were done by two set plays and we couldn't respond."
"We knew today was massive in front of our fans. It has been a long time since we played at Old Trafford so we look forward to playing here and thankfully we managed to get the three points. It is three points, we move on. We have a long season ahead and we will be focused for the next one."
