Orlando Magic Fire Coach Jamahl Mosley After Playoff Collapse Against Pistons
Magic Sack Mosley After 3-1 Lead Blown Against Pistons

Orlando Magic have dismissed head coach Jamahl Mosley following their dramatic first-round playoff exit, which saw them squander a 3-1 series lead against the Detroit Pistons. The decision was announced on Monday, a day after their decisive Game 7 defeat.

This marks the third consecutive season the Magic have been eliminated in the first round, despite advancing through the play-in tournament to secure the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference. The collapse was particularly stark in Game 6, where Orlando surrendered a 24-point home lead on Friday, scoring just 19 points in the second half. That allowed Detroit to level the series at 3-3 and force a winner-take-all Game 7.

Following Sunday's elimination, Mosley accepted full responsibility for the series' outcome. "It's on me," he stated. "I've got to be able to do a better job of preparing them for what they were going to see tonight. We talked a little bit about it, but probably not enough."

Detroit went on to dominate the second half of Game 7, securing a 116-94 victory and becoming only the 15th team in NBA history to overcome a 3-1 playoff deficit. This year's exit mirrored their 2024 first-round loss, which also came in a Game 7.

The 47-year-old spent five seasons at the helm in Orlando, compiling a record of 189-221. Under his leadership, the Magic achieved 41 or more wins in each of the last three seasons, showing steady improvement but failing to advance beyond the first round.

In a statement, Mosley expressed gratitude for his "incredible five-plus years," thanking the DeVos family and hoping his tenure had a "meaningful and lasting" impact on the organisation. He also shared his deep affection for the fans, stating his desire was always "to make you proud to be Magic fans."

Speculation is already mounting regarding Mosley's successor, with former Chicago Bulls head coach Billy Donovan, previously of the University of Florida, reportedly a top target. Donovan resigned from the Bulls last month amidst a significant front office overhaul.
