Maddison and Van de Ven Out Until January for Tottenham and England

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has confirmed that James Maddison's ankle injury is worse than initially feared, ruling the midfielder out until January. The playmaker was substituted in the first half of Monday's 4-1 defeat to Chelsea and will miss England's upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia.

Postecoglou also revealed that defender Micky van de Ven will be sidelined until the new year after suffering a hamstring injury in the same match. 'It's fair to say a fair bit happened after Monday,' Postecoglou said. 'Micky obviously with that hamstring injury, we knew it was fairly significant, probably a couple of months for him looking into the new year.'

Regarding Maddison, Postecoglou added: 'He came off with an ankle injury and the next day wasn't great, so we sent him for a scan. Again probably into the new year for him.' Richarlison is expected to be out for about a month, while Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie are suspended following red cards against Chelsea.

Spurs confirmed Maddison will continue his rehabilitation at the club's training centre under medical supervision. The injuries and suspensions leave Tottenham short-handed for Saturday's Premier League trip to Wolves.
