Fritz: Wimbledon Outfit Was Sponsor's Idea, Fears Looking Stupid

Taylor Fritz walked onto Court 1 at Wimbledon in a custom white suit and scarf, copying Roger Federer's iconic 2007 attire. The American revealed his sponsor BOSS convinced him to wear the outfit, which included a baggy white blazer, baggy trousers, a garment bag, a white scarf, and a BOSS-branded headband.

Fritz, who defeated lucky loser Dusan Lajovic 6-3, 6-4, 6-3, explained his mixed feelings about the bold fashion choice. He said: "I don't know where I stand on it. I think Boss came to me with the idea of wanting to do it, and so we did it. You know, I wasn't 100% sure how I felt, but after seeing the pictures after the match, I feel like it looked all right."

Fear of Looking Stupid

The No. 6 seed admitted that wearing such a statement outfit made him a target for trolls if he had lost early. He said: "Oh, absolutely, yeah. Maybe not more nervous, but you show up in a full outfit and get snipped in the first round, you kind of look stupid. You look really stupid, honestly."

Fritz added that he normally prefers to keep a low profile, but his sponsor's request left him little choice. He noted that even fellow player Frances Tiafoe, known for his own outfits, agreed that losing while dressed up would look bad.

Outfit Design and Removability

Fritz was not involved in the design but made one key request: the outfit had to be easily removable. He said: "They asked me, they came to me with a markup and asked me if I liked it. If I didn't like it, you know... Honestly, for the first thing they sent me, I thought it was pretty solid. Then just I guess the fitting process and me saying, like, If we're going to do pants, they need to be able to come off easily on the court. That's what I did."

He was also uncertain about the scarf, calling it a "game-time decision." Despite his doubts, he felt the overall look was acceptable after seeing the photos.
