Alexis Mac Allister has again said his Liverpool future is uncertain, confirming that nothing has changed since he spoke publicly about his contract situation earlier in the season. The Argentina international is out of contract in 2028 and has previously expressed disappointment at not being offered a new deal, despite seeing fellow midfielders Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch, who both joined in the same summer as the 27-year-old, sign extensions.
New Sporting Director and Ownership Stake
Speaking to Sky Sports, Mac Allister pointed to the appointment of Julian Ward as the club's new sporting director and the Amit Bhatia-led 1892 Holdings group consortium purchasing a minority stake in the club when refusing to rule out signing an extension.
"The situation didn't change. But there's a new sporting director. There is a new ownership coming into the club," he said. "So everything can happen and we will see. Whether it is this season or next season, we will see what happens."
Fine Form Under Iraola
Mac Allister has been in good form despite the uncertainty, establishing himself as first-choice in Andoni Iraola's midfield and returning four goals and an assist from 13 appearances. This contrasts with a disappointing season last term under former head coach Arne Slot.
While Mac Allister conceded it had been 'really difficult' under the Dutchman, he explained the changes Iraola has made to help him return to top form. "I feel like we are all connected," he said. "We are more compact and we all know what we have to do. That makes my job much easier for sure."
Role Preferences and Team Focus
Mac Allister has predominantly lined up as Liverpool's deepest midfielder under Iraola, with Szoboszlai or Gravenberch stationed next to him as a number eight and Florian Wirtz lining up as a number 10. While he hinted it was perhaps not his favourite position, he said he just wants to be playing games.
"I do have my preferences, but I don't know if it makes sense to say it," he told Sky Sports. "In the end, what I want is to be on the pitch." He added that understanding the role, whether as a six, eight or ten, is key to doing the best for the team.
